The poster for the Guy Ritchie crime comedy seems to suggest some sort of riff on  Kingsman or even the directors sleek 2015 spy thriller  The Man from U. N. C. L. E. But with the release of its first trailer, The Gentlemen may in fact be a bit of an ironic title. Originally named  Toff Guys,  The Gentlemen is more of a throwback to Ritchies grimy crime capers like  Snatch and  Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. McConaugheys character revealed a familiar smarter than anyone else in the room trait, that he tends to gravitate toward, in his roles. Charting a bloody turf war between London drug barons, The Gentlemen is a disposable crime caper on autopilot. Propped up by an all-star ensemble, particularly the sturdy Charlie Hunnam and scene-stealer Colin Farrell, Guy Ritchie reclaims the genre that brought him to fame but does little more than shuffle battered parts into an intermittently entertaining configuration. While recycling the familiar, leaning on stylised violence and unleashing a flurry of self-satisfied dialogue have long been the writer/directors specialty, this isnt a return to form. And, even though it arrives so soon after his blockbuster Aladdin remake, this certainly not a whole new world, rather a routine return to an easy, well-greased template. A dressed-up rehash of the filmmakers glory days Still, thanks to original hits Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch, Ritchies gangster fare has fans who will be pleased to see the filmmaker leave his over-amped versions of Sherlock Holmes and King Arthur behind. That — plus the lure of fellow stars Matthew McConaughey, Hugh Grant, Henry Golding and Michelle Dockery — will likely be enough to gain audience attention, although timing may help. Opening on January 1 in the UK and Australia, the film should entice a male-heavy demographic which has already seen Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker weeks beforehand. (It releases on January 24 in the US. ) A feature which is as light on surprises as it is on profanity-free banter — swearing seems to have been mistaken for humorous swagger  — The Gentlemen s biggest risk stems from its storytelling gimmick. Linear narratives have rarely appealed to Ritchie, so here the bulk of the story is relayed by scotch-swilling, cockney-accented private detective Fletcher (Grant) to enforcer Ray (Hunnam. Spinning a yarn about ex-Rhodes Scholar-turned-marijuana kingpin Mickey Pearson (McConaughey) who is spoiling to sell his lucrative British empire to American compatriot Mathew (Jeremy Strong) Fletcher tells the tale as if hes reading a screenplay. In fact, he has also written one. Really, that just gives Grant an excuse to exclaim “smash cut” and other filmmaking terms while Ritchies regular editor James Hebert and cinematographer Alan Stewart dutifully follow suit. It also gives the director license to jump frenetically between subplots while drip-feeding crucial information. Theres much bickering, blackmail and brutality to tease; volatile up-and-comer Dry Eye (Golding) has designs on Mickeys business and wife Ros (Dockery) and boxing trainer Coach (Farrell) becomes involved when the teens hes teaching — rap crew Toddlers, who record their antics for YouTube — brazenly rip off one of Mickeys hidden dope farms. As Lock, Stock and Snatch demonstrated successfully, and Revolver and RocknRolla far less so, Ritchies crime films thrive or die based on how convincingly they reuse their by-the-numbers basics. In The Gentlemen s case, skewing millennial via the Toddlers cant push the movie into the upbeat, irreverent and relevant territory it covets — or make it feel fresh. A few energetic action scenes make a splash, a couple of comic lines hit their marks and the heavy use of tartan tracksuits visibly stands out, but this is still a dressed-up rehash of the filmmakers glory days. Although audience-friendly, Ritchies cast is left shouldering an oversized load. Just landing on the right side of cartoonish, Grant is nonetheless lively, slippery and nicely served by his back-and-forth with the contrastingly stern Hunnam. As for Farrell in Vinnie Jones mode, hes the most in-sync with the dialogues rhythm — a must in a film with plenty of it. But, as the token big-name US import, its McConaughey who sums up The Gentlemen s fortunes best. He looks the suave part; however he also could have wandered in from any other glossy crime caper. Actually, one late visual flourish perhaps encapsulates the movie even better, screaming its allegiance to formula in a striking yet oh-so-familiar image. Positioned from below, peering up at Farrell and Hunnam from a car boot, the shot is instantly recognisable — because, like too much in this slick but flimsy gangster piece, Ritchie keeps using variations of it across his filmography. The director goes back to his crime caper roots, firing Matthew McConaughey and Colin Farrell at Downtons Michelle Dockery and a cockney Hugh Grant. Sort that out G uy Ritchie is course-correcting. After spending the last few years churning out largely anonymous big-budget FILM seemingly to order, he has now returned to his roots. The Gentlemen is a Guy Ritchie film in the classic sense, in that it looks like a better-executed version of something that Danny Dyer would have starred in seven or eight years ago. Its a crime caper, its set in London, and it stars everyone. No, really, it stars everyone. And better yet, if the trailer is any indication, everyone gets to do doing something thats differently but equally preposterous. Here, for your pleasure, is a ranking of all them from least preposterous to most. 7. OK, when I said that everyone had been given something to do, I had clearly forgotten about Colin Farrell. Because, unless Im very much mistaken, Guy Ritchie just let Colin Farrell walk on to the set in his own clothes and act as himself using his own accent. I cant say this for a fact, but Id be willing to bet money that Colin Farrell is currently somewhere in the world wearing this exact outfit and pointing at someone in this exact way. Not very preposterous at all. 6. Matthew McConaughey is also in The Gentlemen, filling the role of the Roving American Superstar. Snatch had Brad Pitt. Revolver had Ray Liotta. RocknRolla had, um, Jeremy Piven. And now theres McConaughey. In this regard, his inclusion in the film isnt actually very preposterous at all. However, you will note that in The Gentlemen he appears to be dressed as Guy Ritchie. Its a bit preposterous, but not that preposterous. 5. Henry Golding also stars in The Gentlemen. He isnt given a tremendous amount to do in the trailer, but based on his past work Im going to guess that his character is dead and appears to McConaugheys character as a ghost because McConaughey received his heart after they were both in some sort of tragic Christmas tree accident. Relatively preposterous. 4. Now were getting to the good stuff. Michelle Dockery is here, and at first sight all looks normal. But then she opens her mouth and, well, its hard to say exactly what comes out. She sounds like a TOWIE cast member, had TOWIE been set in a low-security prison. She sounds like shes auditioning for a cartoon about wartime spivs. She sounds like the goblin who lives on Kat Slaters shoulder and advises her in times of moral uncertainty. She sounds like Guy Ritchie told her that hell dock her pay every time she visibly opens her mouth. Its great, but its preposterous. 3. And then Hugh Grant opens his mouth. Now, it is an unarguably good thing that Hugh Grant enjoys acting again. It is an especially good thing that his matinee idol looks have faded enough to allow him to become the character actor he always wanted to be. I have no doubt that the best work of Hugh Grants career hasnt even happened yet. But this is just violently preposterous. Hes got a little beard. Hes got a high-pitched cockney accent. Its as if he was aiming for Ben Kingsley in Sexy Beast but coughed and accidentally ended up hitting David Beckham from 1999. It is preposterous to the Nth degree, and I am kind of here for it. 2. It took me until his name was flashed up on screen to work out that this is Charlie Hunnam. I thought it might have been Nick Frost at first, or Shia LaBeouf, or any number of other people. Now, clearly, he looks preposterous here. But trust me, you could listen to his accent for a thousand years and still not be able to confidently place it. He might be a cockney, or he might be Welsh, or he might be from Liverpool, or he might be from Newcastle, or he might be German. There is honestly no way to tell. Ill assume that its deliberate because, otherwise, yeesh. 1. And finally, the most preposterous of them all, Jeremy Strong as Jeff Goldblum. Incredible.

This is the latest from Guy Ritchie, who seems to be back to his old ways after having spent the last decade making big studio blockbusters, such as last year's King Arthur: Legend of the Sword and this year's live-action Aladdin remake for Disney. Not to mention his pair of Sherlock Holmes movies, as well as The Man from U. N. C. L. E... Here, the filmmaker has assembled an A-list ensemble, led by Matthew McConaughey, in what looks to be a crime flick in the vein of some of his early works, such as Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Right off the bat, this trailer makes it clear Guy Ritchie is very much back to his old ways. It feels cut from the same cloth as Snatch. What we're seeing here positions this as a criminal power struggle between Matthew McConaughey and Crazy Rich Asians breakout Henry Golding. Lots of drugs, guns, cars and classy outfits. It all gets very violent, and McConaughey gets some one-liners that suit him very well. To ice the cake, it's all set to the tune of Cream's Sunshine of Your Love, which certainly adds a little something to the atmosphere. A poster has also been revealed. Guy Ritchie, who penned the screenplay in addition to directing, took to Twitter to share it, and it's rather simple. We see a glass of whiskey, with a piece of ice shaped like a gun in it set against a pure white background. The impressive cast list is positioned above the glass.
